In our hearts we know that pets enrich our lives, and in recent years scientific studies have begun to pin-point the ways that companion animals improve our minds and our bodies. Beyond walks and “fetch,” beyond lazy days in the sun and eager faces at the end of the day, pets provide documented health benefits. A 1993 report in the Harvard Health Letter explains that companion animals have more consistent behavior compared to our human companions and that they offer unconditional affection. The effect: lower blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety level for pet owners. We repay them with love and attention. In fact, more than 60 percent of pets receive “as much attention as children,” according to the 1994 American Animal Hospital Association pet owner survey.
Pet owners are fortunate to have access to many preventative medicines and procedures, but if you’ve never experienced a problem, you may wonder if the cost of prevention is worth it.
For proof, take a look at these figures provided by Emily Pointer, veterinarian at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:
–Heartworm disease
Prevention: Monthly pills for a 25 pound dog: $60 per year; yearly test, $25.
Treatment: Exam, bloodwork, radiographs and injections for a straightforward case, about $500. The cost can go into the thousands for a complicated case and many dogs die or have a shortened lifespan even if treated.
–Flea and ticks
Prevention: about $20 per month for topical medication for a 25-pound dog.
Treatment for flea- and tick-borne disease: Exam, diagnostic testing and 30 days of antibiotics would cost about $200 for a simple case; Pointer has one case where the owner has spent over $3000 treating complications from a tick bite infection.
–Kennel cough
Prevention: Exam and vaccine $105.
Treatment: Exam, radiograph and medication about $270. If pneumonia develops, hospitalization and treatment are about $1,200-$1,600.

Dosage and Administration:
Dogs and Cats: Acute Hyprothrombinemia (with hemorrhage) - Administer orally at the rate of 2.5-5 mg./kg. body weight (1 capsule per each 22 pounds body weight for lower dosage or 1 capsule per each 11 pounds body weight for higher dosage) daily as conditions require up to 3 weeks. Frequency and amount of oral administration should be guided by regular determination of prothrombin time.
Warnings: It is recommended that Vitamin K1 Capsules be used in follow-up therapy only after an administration of Vitamin K1 Injection and hospitalization is no longer required.

Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Shampoo 4% - Full Strength, for mild to severe dermatological conditions in dogs, cats and horses where a full strength antiseptic, antimicrobial, cleansing and deodorizing formulation may be beneficial.
Precautions: For topical use only on dogs, cats and horses. Avoid contact with eyes. Store product at room temperature, protected from light. If irritation develops, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian.
Active Ingredient: Chlorhexidine 4%
Directions:
Wet coat thoroughly with water and work sufficient shampoo over as large an area as will allow a mild lather to develop. Then proceed to lather another area. When the entire coat is treated, allow to stand for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water. repeat procedure if necessary.
Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Shampoo is an antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal shampoo containing Chlorhexidine 1.0%, for use on dogs, cats and horses.
Indications: For dermatolotical conditions in dogs, cats and horses, where an antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal cleansing and deodorizing formulation would be beneficial. Also for routine shampooing of normal animals.
Directions: Wet the coat thoroughly with water and work sufficient shampoo over as large and area as will allow with a mild lather. Continue to lather additional areas until the entire coat is treated. Allow to stand on the coat for 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Repeat if necessary.
